Overland Sam
Big drives and long horizons. The world’s best road trips, stop by stop.
Places Overland Sam recommends
- Moraine Lake (Banff, Canada): The bluest water you’ll ever see. Shuttle only now — book the early slot.
- Delicate Arch (Moab, United States): Hike it for sunset when the rock glows. 3 miles round trip, no shade.
- Bixby Creek Bridge (Big Sur, United States): The most photographed bridge on the coast. Pull off just north for the classic shot.
- Knysna Heads (Knysna, South Africa): Twin cliffs guarding the lagoon mouth. The eastern head has the best lookout.
- Seljalandsfoss (Reykjavik, Iceland): The one you can walk behind. Bring a rain shell, you will get wet.
- Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (Reykjavik, Iceland): Icebergs drifting to the sea, then washing up on Diamond Beach across the road.
- Tsitsikamma National Park (Knysna, South Africa): Suspension bridges over the Storms River mouth. Do the short boardwalk trail.
- Mesa Arch (Moab, United States): Sunrise lights the underside of the arch on fire. Get there in the dark.
- Peyto Lake (Banff, Canada): Wolf-head shaped and impossibly blue, off the Icefields Parkway.
- McWay Falls (Big Sur, United States): An 80-foot waterfall onto a hidden beach. Short walk, huge payoff.
- Nepenthe (Big Sur, United States): Burger and a view 800 feet above the Pacific. Time it for sunset.
- Dead Horse Point (Moab, United States): A gooseneck of the Colorado 2,000 feet below. Best at golden hour.
